If you sell in the EU and EEA (European Economic Area), your store is required to display a user privacy permission banner to allow customers to decide whether to authorize privacy data to your store. SHOPLINE’s GDPR-Privacy Banner app helps your store comply with the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by displaying a privacy banner to customers. It also supports Google Consent Mode to minimize the impact on your Google Ads performance while complying with privacy regulations.

Configuring the Privacy Banner
Complete the configurations in this section to set up and display the privacy banner on your store.
Enabling the “Customer Privacy” Setting
- From your SHOPLINE admin panel, go to the Online Store channel > Preferences > Customer Privacy section.
-
Select the Collect personal data after receiving customer’s permission option. This will prevent your store from collecting user data by default and restrict third-party (e.g., advertising) from embedding advertising privacy tracking.
Enabling the GDPR Privacy Banner
- From your SHOPLINE admin panel, go to the Apps page and open the GDPR-Privacy Banner app. Install it if you haven’t.
-
In the Publish section, select the Display a privacy banner in your online store option and click Go to open in the prompt above that will direct you to enable the app in your store’s theme editor.
-
In the App embeds pane of the theme editor, turn on the toggle of GDPR-Privacy Banner.
- Return to the app, and configure the desired appearance of your privacy banner (dark or light).
- Configure the content of the banner, including the title, description, and buttons. If you need to provide the text in different languages, consider installing the Multi-Language Translator app.
- Provide the link to your privacy policy page. If you don't have one, click Create a policy here to create one.
-
Preview the banner in the right pane in real time. Regardless of your Publish setting and your location, the banner preview is available by default.
- Once finished, click Update in the upper right corner.
Configuring and Verifying the Google Consent Mode
To configure Google Consent Mode, enter your Google conversion number in the app.
Note: The Digital Markets Act (DMA) is an EU law that took effect on March 6, 2024. As a result of the DMA, Google requires merchants and advertisers to obtain user consent, or ads performance may be impacted. If your store runs in the European Economic Area (EEA) and uses Google Ads and related Google services, we recommend you take immediate action. Google Consent Mode uses customer consent to determine whether to use cookies to track customer data or for specific purposes. If the customer does not consent to advertising or analytics cookies, Consent Mode automatically adjusts the behavior of related third-party code to prevent it from reading or writing cookies for advertising or analytics purposes. |
How to Get Your Google Conversion ID?
-
If you use the Google channel on SHOPLINE and provide your conversion ID before, you can find the ID in the channel settings. Go to the Google channel, copy the ID from the Google Ads section, and paste it into the app. Remember to add the prefix "AW-" before the ID. For example, if the ID is "A00123," enter "AW-A00123" in the app.
- If you haven’t, refer to Google Ads Conversion Tracking Settings to get your conversion ID from Google Ads.
How to Verify Google Consent Mode?
- Install the official Google Chrome extension Tag Assistant Companion.
- Open the extension and follow the instructions to link your store and navigate to your store.
-
Once the store loads, you will see the default consent status.
-
When customers accept or reject the privacy popup in your store, you will see the updated consent status.
Note: Verification can only be done when you access from the EU region. |
