Customizing Your UTM Parameters
UTM parameters are a piece of code that ensures you can fully track the conversion information of your ads. While SmartIntellect has not yet supported the integration with every advertisement channel, you can still use the default UTM parameters of SmartIntellect by adding them to the end of the URL to track the effectiveness of marketing campaigns and contents.
SLCDP Parameters
When creating new ads, you can set up your ad links according to the following parameter specifications:
slcdp_source={source_name}&slcdp_campaign={campaign_id}&slcdp_term={ad_group_id}&slcdp_ad_id={ad_id}
Replace the { } with the sources you want to track, which can be hardcoded by manually entering the source, campaign, ad group, and ad names. When SmartIntellect tracks visitor sources, we will display the source channel name, campaign, ad group, and ad. Parameter values are retrieved based on the following parameters:
- Source channel name: retrieved from slcdp_source
- Campaign: retrieved from slcdp_campaign
- Ad group: retrieved from slcdp_term
- Ad: retrieved from slcdp_ad_id or slcdp_content
UTM Parameters
You can also use traditional UTM parameter specifications to track your ad links. You can set up your ad links according to the following parameter specifications:
utm_source={source_name}&utm_campaign={campaign_id}&utm_term={ad_group_id}&ad_id={ad_id}
Replace the { } with the dynamic values available in your sources or hardcode these values by manually entering the source, campaign, ad group, and ad names. When SmartIntellect tracks visitor sources, we will display the source channel name, campaign, ad group, and ad. Parameter values are retrieved based on the following parameters:
- Source channel name: retrieved from utm_source
- Campaign: retrieved from utm_campaign
- Ad Group: retrieved from utm_term
- Ad: retrieved from ad_id or utm_content
For example, If the link you are promoting is https://www.myshop.myshopline.com/products/bags and you want to track conversions from blog visitors, you can add utm_source=post_blog to the link, which becomes https://www.myshop.myshopline.com/products/bags?utm_source=post_blog&utm_campaign=111&utm_term=222&ad_id=333. When customers visit your store from the blog, you can filter and view data with the channel source name post_blog in the attribution report.
Meta UTMs
Use these tracking parameters on Meta platforms to track the performance of your ads. These tracking parameters can be used alone or simply added to any tracking parameters you are already using:
slcdp_source={{site_source_name}}&slcdp_ad_id={{ad.id}}
or
slcdp_source=facebook&slcdp_ad_id={{ad.id}}
If you wish to use traditional UTM, you can also use these parameters:
utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign={{campaign.id}}&utm_term={{adset.id}}&utm_content={{ad.id}}
Your URL parameter field should contain at least one of the following identifiable parameters and parameter values: slcdp_source=facebook or utm_source=facebook. When the URL that customers visit contains these tracking information, it will be determined that the customers clicked on your Meta ad. Note that if your ad does not contain these tracking parameters, we can’t guarantee comprehensive attribution results.
Where to Manually Enter These Tracking Parameters
Each ad you create or edit in Meta Ads Manager has a Tracking section where you can paste tracking parameters in the URL parameters field to track user sources. To track the complete ad performance, we recommend entering:
slcdp_source=facebook&slcdp_campaign={{campaign.id}}&slcdp_term={{adset.id}}&slcdp_content={{ad.id}}
or
utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign={{campaign.id}}&utm_term={{adset.id}}&utm_content={{ad.id}}
Please note that only ads successfully tracked with campaign ID, ad set ID, and ad ID will display Meta ad spend, Meta ad ROAS, and other data metrics in the attribution report.
Alternatively, you can click Build a URL parameter and create custom parameters to configure the complete link containing campaign ID, ad set ID, and ad ID:
- Campaign source: Enter "facebook"
- Campaign name: Select {{campaign.id}}
- Add custom parameter: enter "utm_term" for the parameter name, and select {{adset.id}} for the parameter value
- Add custom parameter: enter "utm_content" for the parameter name, and select {{ad.id}} for the parameter value
Please note that updating URL parameters on ads will put the ads into a "processing" stage. The processing stage can take up to 1 hour, and ad spend will be paused while Meta processes the ads. In some cases, updating URL parameters on active ads will reset the social proof of the ads and send them back to the learning stage.
Google Ads UTMs
Use these tracking parameters on the Google platforms to track the performance of your ads. When connecting Google Ads to your SmartIntellect account, you need user or admin access to the Google Ads account. If you haven't set any tracking parameters before, copy these tracking parameters as follows:
{lpurl}?slcdp_source=google&slcdp_campaign={campaignid}&slcdp_term={adgroupid}&slcdp_ad_id={creative}
If your tracking template already includes UTM, simply use "&" to append our tracking parameters that start with slcdp_source to the end of the existing UTM string. For example:
- Existing UTM: {lpurl}?utm_source=google&utm_campaign=blue
- SLCDP Tracking Parameters:
slcdp_source=google&slcdp_campaign={campaignid}&slcdp_term={adgroupid}&slcdp_ad_id={creative} - Merge:
{lpurl}?utm_source=google&utm_campaign=blue&slcdp_source=google&slcdp_campaign={campaignid}&slcdp_term={adgroupid}&slcdp_ad_id={creative}
Your URL parameter field should contain at least one of the following identifiable parameters and parameter values: slcdp_source=google or utm_source=google. When the URL that customers visit contains these tracking information, it will be determined that the customers clicked on your Google ad. Note that if your ad does not contain these tracking parameters, we can’t guarantee comprehensive attribution results.
Where to Manually Enter These Tracking Parameters
In your Google Ads account, click on Settings from the left navigation bar, then select Account Settings. Paste the following tracking parameters into the Tracking Template" text field of the Tracking section:
{lpurl}?slcdp_source=google&slcdp_campaign={campaignid}&slcdp_term={adgroupid}&slcdp_ad_id={creative}
Identifiable UTM Source Parameters
Below are all acceptable UTM schemes for Meta, Google, TikTok, and others. Replacing utm_source with slcdp_source also enables user tracking.
