Understanding URL Structure
Understanding how a URL is structured helps you optimize your store for better branding, navigation, and SEO performance. You can customize your store’s URL structure based on your brand, industry, and SEO strategy. The image below breaks down each part of a URL, helping you understand how elements like the domain, subdomain, and slug work together when customizing your store’s URLs.
Incorrect URL structure configurations can negatively impact your site's SEO performance. If you're not familiar with SEO principles, it's recommended to stick with SHOPLINE's default URL structure.
Types of URL Structures
There are three types of URL structures. Using Products as an example:
| Type | Example URL |
| Standard | https://test.myshopline.com/products/{product handle} |
| Concise | https://test.myshopline.com/{product handle} |
| Custom | https://test.myshopline.com/{custom path}/{product handle} |
Setting Up URL Structures
- In the SHOPLINE admin panel, go to Online Store > Preferences > URL structure settings. Toggle Turn on URL structure settings, then click Edit.
- Select Custom to edit the URL path, then click Update.

- Go to the Search engine optimization section and click Edit.
- In the URL field, you can choose between:
- Default: The URL will follow the URL structure settings.
- Custom: You can manually customize this URL.
FAQs
-
Why can’t I see the "URL structure settings" feature in my SHOPLINE admin panel?
The URL structure settings feature may not be visible for the following reasons:- Theme Version: This feature is only supported on stores using OS 2.1 or OS 3.0 themes.
- Whitelist Access: This is a limited-access feature. You must contact your Merchant Success Manager or SHOPLINE online support to request to be added to the whitelist.
-
Why does the URL remain unchanged when I modify the Product Handle?
The current rules are as follows:
- When Custom URL Structure is disabled, the product URL automatically changes when you update the Product Handle.
-
When Custom URL Structure is enabled, the product URL remains unchanged even if the Product Handle is modified.
This is expected behavior. After Custom URL Structure is enabled, the product URL follows the customized structure you configured and is no longer automatically linked to the Product Handle.
To manually update the product URL when Custom URL Structure is enabled, you can use either of the following methods:
-
Through the SHOPLINE admin panel: Go to the product details page, click the edit icon in the Search engine optimization section, and modify the product URL.
- Via the Update Product API: Enter the new path in the Request Body. For detailed instructions, please refer to the Request Body section in the "Update a product" API documentation
-
Through the SHOPLINE admin panel: Go to the product details page, click the edit icon in the Search engine optimization section, and modify the product URL.
