Adding Punycode Domain Names
Punycode is a representation of Unicode with the limited character set of ASCII used for Internet hostnames. It is commonly seen in non-English domain names. For example, the Chinese domain "www.中文.com" is encoded as "www.xn--fiq228c.com" and the German domain "www.münchen.com" is encoded as "www.xn--mnchen-3ya.com". This guide will detail how to add Punycode domain names.
Adding Your Punycode Domain Name
To add a Punycode domain name, follow the steps below:
- In your SHOPLINE admin panel, go to Settings > Domains. In the Domain name section, click + Add a domain.
- Enter the resolved domain name in the field, and we’ll automatically detect whether it is a Punycode domain.
- Then, follow the on-screen instructions to complete the domain binding process.
- Once the domain is successfully added, a confirmation message will appear along with the next steps. Click Complete to return to the domain list.
- In the domain list, the domain you just added will be labeled Punycode.
Important Considerations
Unlike other types of domains, SHOPLINE uses Let's Encrypt (LE for short) as the SSL certificate authority for Punycode domains. Due to the limitations of certificate applications from LE, the same domain can request an SSL certificate from LE up to five times per week. Exceeding this limit means your domain will not be able to obtain LE SSL certificate validation for the remainder of the week.
Note: Using LE certificates on other platforms will consume the weekly certificate limit. When adding a Punycode domain in SHOPLINE, you will not receive any error messages regarding exceeding the limit. However, exceeding the limit will cause your Punycode domain URL to be inaccessible. |
