Setting Up Domain Redirections
Domain redirection allows you to control how visitors are routed between different domains connected to your store. This is especially useful when managing multiple domains for branding, regional markets, or marketing campaigns, and helps ensure that visitors are directed to the correct destination while maintaining a consistent store experience.
SHOPLINE provides two types of domain redirection settings: primary domain redirection, which applies globally to all additional domains, and custom domain redirections, which allow you to configure routing between specific domains.
This guide explains how these two types of domain redirection work, how they differ, and how to configure them based on your business needs.
Understanding Domain Redirection Types
Primary Domain Redirection
Primary domain redirection is a global setting that determines whether all additional domains automatically redirect to your primary domain.
When enabled:
- All traffic from additional domains is redirected to the primary domain
- The primary domain becomes the only public-facing domain
- Visitors always see a consistent URL
This setting is typically used to maintain a single official domain for your store.
Custom Domain Redirections
Custom domain redirection allows you to redirect one specific domain to another connected domain.
Unlike primary domain redirection, this setting:
- Applies only to selected domains
- Does not affect all domains globally
- Allows more flexible routing between domains
This is useful for campaign domains, regional domains, or domain variations.
Choosing the Right Redirection Setting
Use Primary Domain Redirection when:
- You want all traffic consolidated under one main domain
- You want a consistent public-facing URL
- You want to avoid duplicate domain access
Use Custom Domain Redirections when:
- You need to redirect specific domains to different destinations
- You are managing multiple markets or campaigns
- You require selective routing instead of global redirection
Configuring Primary Domain Redirection
You can enable or disable automatic redirection to your primary domain.
Enabling Primary Domain Redirection (Recommended)
- Go to Settings > Domains in your SHOPLINE Admin.
In the Domains section, locate your primary domain and click Activate redirect.
In the confirmation window, click Activate redirect to confirm.
After activation:
- All additional domains will automatically redirect to the primary domain
- The primary domain becomes the only accessible domain
- Changes may take several minutes to take effect due to caching
Disabling Primary Domain Redirection (Redirect Forbidden)
- Go to Settings > Domains in your SHOPLINE Admin.
In the Domains section, locate your primary domain and click Redirect forbidden.
In the confirmation window, click Redirect forbidden to confirm.
After disabling:
- Additional domains remain accessible
- Visitors can access your store using multiple domain URLs
- URLs will not automatically change to the primary domain
Configuring Custom Domain Redirections (Access by Request)
To redirect one domain to another:
| Note: This feature is available only to selected merchants who have been granted access. To request access, please contact SHOPLINE Customer Support. |
- Go to Settings > Domains in your SHOPLINE Admin.
In the Domains section, locate the domain you want to redirect and click Switch.
In the pop-up window, select Custom redirect.
Click the Select domain dropdown menu, choose the target domain, then click Switch to confirm.
You will be redirected back to the domain list page.
To confirm the redirection was successful:
- Check for a notification in the top-right corner, or
- Review the domain list to verify the updated redirection status.
| Note: Changes may take up to 10 minutes to take effect due to caching. |
Rules and Limitations for Configuring Domain Redirection
Unsupported Domain Types
The following domains cannot be configured for custom domain redirection:
- Primary domain
- SHOPLINE default domains (e.g., {handle}.myshopline.com)
- Custom domains assigned to markets
- Unconnected domains
Target Domain Restrictions
Ensure that:
- The source and target domains are not the same
- The target domain is not the primary domain
- The target domain is another connected custom domain
Multi-Level Redirection Not Supported
SHOPLINE does not support chained redirections.
For example:
- If domain A → domain B,
you cannot:- Redirect domain A again
- Use domain B as a target for another redirect
Each domain can only participate in one redirection relationship.
Best Practices for Domain Redirection
- Enable primary domain redirection to maintain a consistent domain structure
- Use custom domain redirections only when specific routing is required
- Avoid creating unnecessary or complex redirection setups
- Do not create redirect chains
- Plan domain routing carefully when managing multiple domains
