Managing Market Switching and Ordering Restrictions at Checkout
The Checkout setting in Preferences allows you to more precisely manage cross-market ordering and shipping logic. With this feature, you can control which countries or regions customers can select for shipping at checkout and decide whether the system should automatically switch markets based on the customer’s shipping address.
This article explains the impact of enabling or disabling the Checkout feature, provides usage recommendations, and describes how to configure the setting.
Impact of Enabling or Disabling the Checkout Feature
When the Checkout feature is enabled, the system automatically determines and switches the market based on the customer’s selected country at checkout. When the feature is disabled, the checkout process will no longer be restricted by markets and will instead follow your Shipping and delivery settings.
The table below outlines the differences between the two states:
| State | Available Countries/Regions |
Customer Experience at Checkout |
Example |
| Enabled | Only the countries or regions included in all enabled markets will be displayed. Countries not configured in any market cannot be selected at checkout. | When a customer changes their shipping address to another country during checkout, the system automatically switches to the corresponding market. This switch affects all market-related data, including currency, available products, prices, and language. | A customer browsing in the U.S. market changes their shipping address to France during checkout. The system automatically switches to the France market, displaying prices in euros and products available in that market. |
| Disabled | Follows the shipping destinations defined under Shipping and delivery, without being limited by markets. | When a customer changes their country during checkout, the system does not automatically switch markets. The order will be placed under the market the customer was in before entering checkout. | A customer proceeds to checkout from the U.S. market, but selects a U.K. shipping address. The system still displays prices in USD and products from the U.S. market. |
Usage Recommendations
-
If you want the system to automatically switch markets at checkout, enable this feature. When enabled, the system will automatically switch markets based on the customer’s selected country or region, displaying the correct prices, currency, and product information.
Reminder: Before enabling this feature, make sure every country or region under each market has a configured shipping plan. Otherwise, that country will not be available for selection at checkout. -
If you want customers to freely place orders across different countries or regions, disable this feature. When disabled, the shipping address selected at checkout will not be restricted by markets. Customers can place orders based on the available shipping destinations defined under Shipping and delivery.
Reminder: After disabling this feature, ensure that all countries in Shipping and delivery have valid shipping plans configured. Otherwise, customers may not be able to complete their orders. For more details, see "Setting Up Your SHOPLINE Shipping Profiles." - If you want to enable this feature but still allow customers to choose from all configured shipping regions, it is recommended to create a new market that includes all other regions configured in Shipping and delivery. This way, even when the Checkout feature is enabled, customers can still select any of those regions as their shipping address during checkout.
