Setting Prices, Costs, and Tax for a Product
The Prices section of the product edit page lets you set the product's selling price, track its cost and profit margin, and determine whether tax applies at checkout.
This guide explains how to set a product's price and compare-at price, track product cost and profit, and configure whether the product is subject to tax.
Note: This guide applies to products without variants. For products with variants, pricing, cost, and tax settings are configured differently. For detailed instructions, refer to "Creating and Setting Up a Product with Variants."
Accessing the Prices Section
To access the pricing settings for a new or existing product:
- From your SHOPLINE Admin, go to Products.
- Click Create product to create a new product, or select an existing product to edit.
-
Locate the Prices section on the product edit page.
- After configuring the pricing settings described in the following sections, click Save or Update to save your changes.
Setting a Price and Compare-at Price for a Product
Set the product's selling price and, if needed, a compare-at price to display a discount:
-
In the Price field, enter the product's selling price.
-
Optionally, enter a Compare-at price that is higher than the Price. SHOPLINE displays the Compare-at price with a strikethrough alongside the selling price to indicate a discount.
Note: If the product is included in a promotion or discount, the price a customer pays at checkout may differ from the Price entered here.
Tracking Product Cost and Profit
SHOPLINE automatically calculates the product's profit and margin based on its selling price and cost:
-
In the Product cost field, enter the cost of acquiring or producing the product. This value isn't shown to customers.
-
SHOPLINE automatically calculates Profit and Margin. These fields can't be edited directly:
- Profit: Calculated as Price − Product cost.
- Margin: Calculated as Profit ÷ Price, expressed as a percentage.
Example: If a product is priced at $50.00 and has a Product cost of $20.00, the Profit is $30.00 and the Margin is 60%.
Charging Tax on a Product
Use Charge tax on this product to determine whether your configured tax rates apply to the product.
Turn on Charge tax on this product if the product is subject to tax. Turn it off if tax shouldn't be charged on the product.
Note: Tax rates are configured separately in your store's tax settings. Charge tax on this product only determines whether those rates apply to this product. For more information about configuring tax rates, refer to "Setting Up and Managing Taxes for Your Store."
