Optimizing Product SEO for Search Engines
Your product's Search engine optimization (SEO) settings control how its title, description, and URL appear in search engine results. Optimizing these details helps search engines understand your products and makes it easier for potential customers to find them.
This guide explains how to configure your product's SEO title, description, and URL, along with best practices for improving search visibility.
Editing a Product's SEO Title, Description, and URL
To edit a product's SEO settings:
- From your SHOPLINE Admin, go to Products and select an existing product, or click Create product to add a new one.
-
Locate the Search engine optimization section on the right and click the pencil icon.
-
In the Search engine optimization panel, review the Preview to see how your product may appear in search results. Then, configure the following fields:
Note: The SEO title and SEO description are pre-filled using the product's name and description, respectively. You can edit these values as needed.
- SEO title: The title displayed in search results. Use a clear, descriptive title that includes relevant product keywords.
- SEO description: A brief summary displayed below the title in search results. Highlight the product's key features to help shoppers understand what you're selling.
- URL: The web address of the product page. Keep the product handle (the last part of the URL) concise and relevant to the product.
- Click Confirm, then click Save or Update in the upper-right corner to apply your changes.
|
Note: You can customize your product's URL to make it more descriptive and readable. However, this feature is available only on certain plans. If your plan doesn't support it, an Upgrade now link appears in the panel. |
Writing Effective SEO Titles for a Product
Follow these best practices when writing your product's SEO title:
- Keep titles concise: Aim for approximately 50–60 characters as a general guideline. Longer titles may be truncated in search results depending on the device and available display space.
- Place important keywords near the beginning: Include the product's primary keyword early so customers can quickly understand what you're selling.
- Use relevant keywords naturally: Include descriptive terms that accurately reflect the product, such as its type, material, or key features. Avoid keyword stuffing and unnecessary repetition.
- Write a unique title for each product: Use a distinct, descriptive title that helps customers and search engines differentiate your products.
- Use clear, consistent formatting: Separate information with simple punctuation, such as dashes (-) or vertical bars (|), when helpful. Avoid excessive punctuation that makes titles difficult to read.
- Include your brand name when relevant: Consider adding your brand name at the end of the title to reinforce brand recognition, especially if it isn't already included.
Writing Effective SEO Descriptions for a Product
Follow these best practices when writing your product's SEO description:
- Keep descriptions concise: Aim for approximately 150–160 characters as a general guideline. Search engines may truncate longer descriptions depending on the device and available display space, so prioritize important product information.
- Write meaningful, engaging content: Summarize what shoppers can find on the product page and highlight relevant selling points, such as key features, benefits, or warranty information.
- Write a unique description for each product: Create descriptions that accurately reflect each product rather than reusing the same text across multiple product pages.
- Use relevant keywords naturally: Include terms that shoppers may use to find your product, but avoid keyword stuffing and unnecessary repetition.
- Include useful product details: Where relevant, add information such as the manufacturer, material, size, or other distinguishing features to help shoppers understand the product.
- Match the page content: Make sure your description accurately reflects the product and the information available on its page. Avoid misleading claims or details that aren't supported by the page.
Choosing an Effective URL Handle for a Product
Follow these best practices when choosing a product handle, the last part of the product's URL:
- Use descriptive keywords: Include words that clearly identify the product, such as its name, type, or key features. Avoid unnecessary or unrelated keywords.
- Use lowercase letters: Keep capitalization consistent to make URLs easier to read and share. English words can also help avoid lengthy encoded URLs, but other languages may be appropriate for your target audience.
- Separate words with hyphens: Use hyphens (-) instead of underscores (_) to make the URL easier for shoppers and search engines to understand.
- Keep handles short and meaningful: Use only the words needed to identify the product. Avoid unnecessarily long handles or excessive keywords.
