Creating and Managing 301 URL Redirects
A 301 redirect allows you to permanently forward visitors from one URL to another. This is commonly used when you update page URLs, remove pages, or restructure your store, ensuring that customers can still access the correct content and that your search engine rankings are preserved.
This guide explains when to use 301 redirects, how to create them based on different scenarios, and how to manage them effectively as your store evolves.
When You Need a 301 Redirect
You may need to set up a 301 redirect in the following situations:
- When you change a product, page, or blog URL
- When you remove a page that still receives traffic
- When restructuring your store or migrating content
- When you want to prevent broken links and maintain SEO performance
Before Creating 301 URL Redirects
Before creating redirects, note the following:
- 301 redirects apply to page-level URLs, not domains
- Domain-level redirection should be configured separately
- Redirects are permanent and may affect search engine indexing
Creating Redirects Based on Your Needs
To create and manage redirects, go to Settings > Domains, then locate the 301 Redirect section and click Manage redirections.
Depending on your use case, choose one of the following methods:
Redirecting a Single Page
Use this method when a specific page URL has changed.
-
Click Add redirect.
-
In the pop-up window, enter the following:
- Redirect from: the original URL path
- Redirect to: the new destination URL
- Click Add.
Redirecting a Group of Similar URLs
Use this method when multiple URLs share the same structure (for example, after changing a URL pattern).
-
Click Add a type name redirection.
-
In the pop-up window, enter the following:
- Redirect from: the original URL path
- Redirect to: the new destination URL
- Click Add.
Once configured, all matching URLs will follow the same redirect rule. Any suffix after the defined path will also be redirected accordingly.
Creating Redirects in Bulk
Use this method when managing a large number of redirects, such as during store migration.
-
Click Import.
-
In the pop-up window, click bulk import template to download the template.
- Fill in the redirect information following the template format.
-
Upload the file (supports .csv files up to 10MB) and click Upload.
Managing Existing Redirects
After creating redirects, you can review and maintain them in the redirect list.
Editing Redirects
Locate the redirect you want to update, click the pencil icon, modify the redirect URLs as needed, then click Update.
Deleting Redirects
You can remove redirects individually using the trash icon, or select multiple records and click Delete to remove them in bulk. A confirmation window will appear before deletion.
Finding and Reviewing Redirects
Use the available tools to manage your redirects more efficiently:
- Use the search bar to locate specific redirects.
- Use the Add time filter to view redirects created within a selected time range.
- Use Sort by to organize records.
How Redirects Work in Your Store
When a visitor accesses a redirected URL, they are automatically forwarded to the destination URL. Search engines treat 301 redirects as permanent, transferring SEO value from the original URL to the new one.
To ensure optimal performance, avoid creating redirect chains (for example, A → B → C), as this may impact loading speed and SEO effectiveness.
Best Practices for 301 URL Redirects
- Always create redirects when changing or removing URLs.
- Redirect users to the most relevant page instead of a generic destination.
- Use group-based redirects carefully to avoid unintended matches.
- Regularly review and clean up outdated or unnecessary redirects.
