By default, SHOPLINE provides SEO-friendly URLs, but you can further customize your store’s URL structure to meet specific business and SEO strategies. A well-structured URL enhances user experience, improves crawlability for search engines, and supports keyword optimization. This can help your website rank higher on search engines and attract more traffic. This feature is particularly useful when migrating an existing site to SHOPLINE, as it allows you to retain your original URL structure.
Now, follow this guide to learn how to customize your store URL and ensure a seamless experience for both users and search engines.

Understanding URL Structure
Understanding how a URL is structured helps you optimize your store for better branding, navigation, and SEO performance. You can customize your store’s URL structure based on your brand, industry, and SEO strategy. The image below breaks down each part of a URL, helping you understand how elements like the domain, subdomain, and slug work together when customizing your store’s URLs.
Incorrect URL structure configurations can negatively impact your site's SEO performance. If you're not familiar with SEO principles, it's recommended to stick with SHOPLINE's default URL structure.
Types of URL Structures
There are four types of URL structures. Using Products and Product collections as an example:
| Type | Example URL |
| Standard | https://test.myshopline.com/products/{product handle} |
| Concise | https://test.myshopline.com/{product handle} |
| Custom | https://test.myshopline.com/{custom path}/{product handle} |
| Multi-level (OS 3.0 Themes only) | https://test.myshopline.com/collections/{category tree path}/{product collection handle} |
Note: The Multi-level structure is available only for product collections using OS 3.0 Themes. See "Setting Up Multi-Level Product Collection URLs" below for details. |
Setting Up URL Structures
-
In the SHOPLINE admin panel, go to Online Store > Preferences > URL structure settings. Toggle Turn on URL structure settings, then click Edit.
-
Select Custom to edit the URL path, then click Update.

Setting Up Multi-Level Product Collection URLs
If you plan to use a multi-level URL structure for your product collections, first read "Managing Product Categories with Category Trees (Limited Access)" to confirm that you've enabled the category tree feature.
| Important: The Multi-level URL option must be turned on before you add any product collections. Once a collection has been added, you can no longer change its URL to the multi-level structure. |
We recommend following these steps in order:
- Confirm your store theme is OS 3.0, then go to Online Store > Preferences > URL structure settings. Turn on URL structure settings, then click Edit.
- Locate Product collection URL settings and turn on the Multi-level option.
- After turning it on, go to Products > Collections and add your product collections. For details on creating product collections, refer to "Creating Product Collections."
- Once added, go to the category tree to arrange the hierarchy between your collections. For details on configuring a category tree, refer to "Managing Product Categories with Category Trees (Limited Access)."
Once set up, the system automatically generates each product collection's URL based on its position in the category tree. For example, https://test.myshopline.com/collections/mens/tops/t-shirts. This helps you preserve your original category hierarchy when migrating or maintaining your store.

Customizing URL Structures in SEO sections
New data will follow the format set in the URL structure settings, but you can also customize URLs for specific pages in the SEO sections. For example, to customize a product URL:
- In the SHOPLINE admin panel, go to Products, then select an existing product or add a new one.
- Go to the Search engine optimization section and click Edit.
- In the URL field, you can choose between:
- Default: The URL will follow the URL structure settings.
- Custom: You can manually customize this URL.
Troubleshooting URL Structure Settings
Q1: Why can’t I see the "URL structure settings" feature in my SHOPLINE admin panel?
The URL structure settings feature may not be visible for the following reasons:
- Theme Version: This feature is only supported on stores using OS 2.1 or OS 3.0 themes.
- Whitelist Access: This is a limited-access feature. You must contact your Merchant Success Manager or SHOPLINE online support to request to be added to the whitelist.
Q2: Why does the URL remain unchanged when I modify the Product Handle?
The current rules are as follows:
- When Custom URL Structure is disabled, the product URL automatically changes when you update the Product Handle.
-
When Custom URL Structure is enabled, the product URL remains unchanged even if the Product Handle is modified.
This is expected behavior. After Custom URL Structure is enabled, the product URL follows the customized structure you configured and is no longer automatically linked to the Product Handle.
To manually update the product URL when Custom URL Structure is enabled, you can use either of the following methods:
-
Through the SHOPLINE admin panel: Go to the product details page, click the edit icon in the Search engine optimization section, and modify the product URL.
- Via the Update Product API: Enter the new path in the Request Body. For detailed instructions, please refer to the Request Body section in the "Update a product" API documentation
-
Q3: Why can't I set a custom URL for a specific product collection?
If Multi-level is turned on for that collection, the URL setting is locked and only displays the category tree path; the custom option becomes unavailable. To manually customize that collection's URL again, first switch it back to the Standard or Custom structure in the URL structure settings.
Q4: Why do some of my product collection links show a 404 error?
When the same product collection is linked to more than one parent collection, the system keeps only one optimal path accessible to shoppers; all other paths will return a 404 error. We recommend avoiding linking the same collection to multiple parent collections wherever possible. If an old link has already been bookmarked by customers, referenced by another site, or indexed by search engines, set up a 301 redirect from that link to the current optimal path to avoid affecting the shopper experience and search rankings.
