Migrating Customer Segments from Shopify to SHOPLINE
Customer segments group customers who share similar characteristics based on rules you define, and are commonly used for targeted marketing and for limiting which customers a promotion applies to. With SHOPLINE’s Multi-platform Store Migration app, you can migrate qualifying customer segments from your Shopify store to SHOPLINE, along with the discount codes that apply to them.
This guide explains which segment conditions can be migrated, how to enable the related migration settings, how to handle segments that can’t be migrated automatically, and how to verify your migration results.
Prerequisites for Migrating Customer Segments
Before you start migrating customer segments, please confirm the following:
- You’ve completed the authorization for your Shopify store using the Multi-platform Store Migration app, and have reached the Select Migration Modules page.
- Customer segment migration only supports conditions that exist identically on both Shopify and SHOPLINE. See "Supported Customer Segment Conditions for Migration" below for the full list.
Supported Customer Segment Conditions for Migration
In order for a customer segment to be migrated successfully, its filter conditions must exist identically on both Shopify and SHOPLINE. Please check the table below for the list of currently supported conditions:
| Filter Condition | Shopify Attribute | SHOPLINE Key |
| Date of last abandoned checkout | abandoned_checkout_date | lastAbandonedCreateTime |
| Date customer joined | customer_added_date | createTime |
| Date of first order | first_order_date | firstOrderTime |
| Date of last order | last_order_date | lastOrderTime |
| Number of orders | number_of_orders | payOrderCnt |
| Amount spent | amount_spent | totalAmount |
| Customer account status | customer_account_status | status |
| Customer email subscription status | email_subscription_status | emailSubscribeStatus |
| Customer SMS subscription status | sms_subscription_status | smsSubscribeStatus |
| Customer email domain | customer_email_domain | emailDomain |
| Customer language | customer_language | language |
| Customer tags | customer_tags | customerTag |
Enabling Customer Segment Migration
To migrate customer segments during store migration, follow these steps:
- On the Select Migration Modules page of the Multi-platform Store Migration app, locate and check the Customer Segments module.
- If this is a second migration and you want to overwrite previously migrated data, toggle on Overwrite Update Settings, and check Customer Segments within it. You can then choose Skip or Overwrite Update for the already-migrated customer segment data when prompted.
Handling Customer Segments That Can’t Be Migrated
The migration would fail if a customer segment includes an unsupported filter condition (this applies even if just one condition in a multi-condition combination is unsupported). When this happens, the system will show the following error message: Attribute "xxx" is not supported.
In this case, you can:
- Manually create the corresponding customer segment in SHOPLINE Admin, or
- Create it via API.
| Important: Regardless of which method you use, the segment name for any manually created customer segment must exactly match the name used in the original Shopify store. Discount code migration matches segments by name, so a mismatched name will prevent the discount code from being correctly linked to the customer segment. |
Applying Customer Segments to Discount Code Migration
If a Shopify discount code’s eligible customers are set to “Specific customer segment,” the corresponding customer segment must already exist in SHOPLINE before the discount code’s eligibility can be migrated correctly.
Follow these steps to set up discount code migration:
- Confirm that the customer segment referenced by the discount code has been migrated successfully, or has been manually created in SHOPLINE, with a segment name that matches Shopify exactly.
- On the Select Modules step, check Discount Codes and adjust the configuration as needed. See “Migrating Discount Codes and Order Discount Information from Shopify to SHOPLINE” for more details.
- Start migrating the Discount Codes module.
Verifying Your Migrated Customer Segment Results
We recommend checking your migrated customer segment results in the following order:
- Confirm that all related data (i.e. customers, orders etc) has been migrated successfully.
- Go to the customer segment list in SHOPLINE Admin and locate the corresponding segment.
- Compare the customers returned by that segment against the original segment in Shopify.
| Important: The customers returned by a segment depend on complete customer and order data. We recommend verifying customer segment results only after all related data has finished migrating successfully. |
